I know you're only trying to help but that statement it silly.

Mental illness can be heriditary and people can become mentally ill for no apparent reason other than such 'chemical imbalances' occurring because of a genetic pre-disposition.

Such people cannot 'control' the chemistry of their own brains other than by drugs and/or drugs.

Mental illness is no less an illness than the flu, bronchitis, or cancer. Would you say them 'think yourself better', it's all in your mind? Mental illness has PHYSICAL causes that respond to drugs just as any other illness does.
