After seeing how the MK5 pedal conversion works I now understand the logic in the metal quadrant but I think if/when the plastic one fails I would maybe do the same as my son done on his Fiesta.
He drilled a hole through the pedal and quadrant and fixed them with a bolt then installed a Cortina cable with the manual self adjusted at the gear box end.
