Yes straight across, but I welded a little piece straight across and painted up so looked proper and wouldn't draw attention in a mot etc
Done the same on my 4x4 Sapphire. Cut, welded & painted. (excuse the crap quality pic, just managed to squeeze my phone in the gap to give you an idea.)
