The tappets are hydraulic and not adjustable, so I was informed when I brought mine in to get her looked at.
all Zetec SE engines use mechanical type lifters. the earlier engines had proper shims but the later ones are solid buckets.
I agree that the clearances given are good enough and shouldn't cause any tapping noises.
