OP, it's going to be an ownership issue, in the 'Security' tab you have an 'Advanced' option at the bottom, then the 'Owner' tab, you will probably find the current owner is referencing an unknown account, you therefore need to take ownership of the folder.

cheers Eagle that 1st link sorted it, took several hours of the PC running and giving each file permission, but have not got all my favorites, docs, music etc working
