So, to keep this thread updated for future search reasons.

Fitted a set of plugs, leads, coil pack, and an EGR blanking plate (all 2nd hand but known good parts) and gave the whole inlet side of things a good clean out.

Problem has been sorted and now car drives and pulls as it should. Pretty impressed tbh the way it picks up and hauls its heavy ass along the road.
