Update which may be useful for other owners.
The latest model from Vgate, the VS550 scanner would not connect to car, suspect PWM compatibility issues. This was a shame as others report that it's predecessor did connect with this model.
Ford F SUPER Interface Scanner SCAN TOOL from Ebay was much cheaper and did connect. Once I told (lied !) the scanner that it was connected to a 1.8 TDCI, everything worked. Read and cleared the fault codes and had access to many other parameters.
So fault history cleared with no new fault reports from a short test drive. Let's hope that the cutting out problems have ceased, i'll give that a few days.
Things left to do:-
Replace crank sensor connector
Clean EGR
Change filters.
Clean battery terminals and hope that the stored low volts fault was an old and unrelated event.
tddi ECU pinouts would still be useful if anyone knows where to find them.
