GLWS and everything, but surely this IS the car to break. good interior, good engine, running gear and all the rest, then a cat C shell, not even a cat D, C is usually a fairly hefty whack! in need of work, MOT and tax with shot arches?

Cat c DOES NOT MEAN ITS BEEN HIT ANY WORSE THAN A CAT D!!
It's entirely up to the assessor which cat it goes in,it could have had a scratch down the side could be a cat c but a cat d could have a bent shell or every panel kicked and smashed in its irrelevant.
Cat c is just an indicator not a conclusive set of points like say needing jigging,cat c,needing new rear 1/4,cat c,needs new screen,cat d honestly it's not down to any particular criteria,which in some ways I disagree with but that's that sadly.
Also cat c cars do NOT NECCESSARILY need a VIC check,vosa/dvla decide that (which you can check on the dvla website)and no van needs a VIC check either which again I find odd as a van could be stolen or rung as much as a car!!!!
