Default Ignition timing question

So I've finally decided to show a bit if Interest in my escort. First job is get it on a rolling road for a set up. I'm hoping to drive the car as I'm only a few miles from the tuner. I'm running a standard 2.0 silver top zetec on CBR1100 carbs with 4 branch and full exhaust. I'm using megajolt programable ignition and running a base map I got off tinternet. I've used a friends gas analyser to set up my idle and balanced the carbs correctly. I've got a nasty flat spot between 3300rpm and 4000rpm. The car bogs down and over fuels terribly. Do I need to advance or retard the timing to help clear this? I understand I'm not a engine tuner nor do I pretend to be. I just want to make the car more drive able to get me the short journey to the garage.
All help welcome
