If that's what they want to do, let them.
I know it costs me more, but if I'm selling a car on eBay, I will ALWAYS start at 99p and put on whatever reserve I want. That way it generates more interest from the start and you always get lots of messages asking what you'd end early for. My price to end early is always a bit more than the reserve, but not massively so. 90% of the time I'll get a buyer meeting my price so avoid final value fees. If not, the car will sell if it hits its reserve and won't if it doesn't.
Must have sold 50 cars on eBay over the years now and only once did a car come £40 short of its reserve. I re-listed it and 5 days later it sold for £150 above reserve and the buyer was happy he got a bargain.
