Stu, if the wastegate is stuck open then the turbo will overwork as its trying to create a pressure but most of the air it flows go's straight down the exhaust, hence the turbo will have to do more work to try to generate the same pressure.
It wouldnt mate. A turbochargers workrate is directly related to the air flow through its turbine wheel, so if you limit this airflow, you limit the work done, and that is the sole reason for the wastegates existance, to limit flow and thus work. It truly is as simple as that.
