I'm 19 so insurance plays a massive part in this. For instance I cannot insure an E46 320d (150bhp) and yet insurance on an ST TDCi is pretty reasonable!
Why must it be a Diesel? Unless you do mega-mileage, the savings are usually minimal.
If it really must be a Diesel I'd still be looking German, although I'm really not sure why a 320d would be any more to insure than an ST? I'm sure there'd be nothing in it if you shopped around. If not then any A3 or A4 diesel would be a solid choice.
Or a friend has just bought an Alfa GT JTD and that's a great car. Italian fragility would put some off, but it's a pretty rugged Vauxhall engine in the diesels.
