Some older cars used a mechanical rev limter within the dizzy like you say (2.8I Capri for example), like a spring setup, where as later and current set ups have limiters within the ECU software.

As the head was a 1600i it would of been in the ECU im guessing, the dizzy cap,..... il just get some pictures lol
