Why not simply fix it and use the car? And when the time comes to sell it plead ignorance if the buyer finds the plate (unlikely). No offence but it's not like you're going to loose thousands, it will still have a value even as it is.

As said i severely doubt it's on the police's radar. And while I can see you're just trying to be honest, posting it all over the internet does seem to be a bit on the foolish side.
