No its more of an inlet backfire, I've had this many times with carbs, its quite alarming when your leaning across an engine adjusting the carb with out the filter on and you get a big flash back lol

This happens with LPG cars too, they even have a flap in the air box to allow the pressure to escape.

But as for it 'knocking' the mfi unit out i don't know.
