I dont know what Jano is on about either, unburnt fuel igniting in the exhaust is no different on MFI to EFI, in fact your more likely to get it on an MFI RST running big boost then on EFI because you cannot map the fuelling properly.
Im not sure, but i think some people say that backfires can knock the mfi unit out of cal, I've never seen it personally, but thats why the flap will lift up past its seat, to allow for backfires.

But like you say, flat shift all the way
