Default Tyres size's

I have just fitted a 225/45/17 to my wheel and it won't fit the front of my 3dr.
When I turn the steering it will catch the bumper one way and the body kit the other.
Now if I went to 215/45/17 will that reduce the height aswell as the width? I always thought the 45 profile is a percentage of the width?
The problem I have is I can find any trackday tyres is 40 profile that will fit my wheel and car. 235 will catch the arches and 205 won't be any good for a 8" rim.
215/4017 and 225/40/17 would be ideal but there's no track tyres in them sizes.
