I did a timing belt on a 55 focus a few weeks back that had the endura diesel engine in it aswell, ford must have been trying to get rid of the last few eh!

If it hasn't got a cam sensor, the timing error could possibly be a timing fault (cam belt) or crank to pump timing chain fault or something along those lines.
When you had the crank sensor out, did it look ok with no swarf or marks on it?
Could try a crank sensor and check the timing.
