Default Gasket between turbo and manifold, who uses one?

The small square gasket that goes between the turbo flange and the place where it mounts onto the manifold.
Been having issues with this, before I got my car rebuilt it never ran one and I never had any issues, when I put it back together I decided to put one in, it lasted about 300 miles then melted, i bought/brought another one and it lasted an even shorter time before doing the same, they were both metal, so when I saw melted I mean it disintegrated and there was less than 1/4 of it left.
Do most people run without them?
