You will need to register with the DVLA and you should be able to retain the current plate.

Likewise when we are buying from the mainland. It would be much easier if you can get the whole V5 from the owner. As trying to post documents between the two dvla and dvlni is like picking your nose with a lump hammer.
Total waste of your life as both departments are useless fucks.
