Default Clutch Ratchet

This bloody car is doing my head in!

The clutch bite was through the floor on my mk4 escort. I put a new ratchet kit on, which turned out to be one of the most stressfull things i've ever done in my life & its exactly the same

After further inpection, the ratchet appears to always be one tooth out. If I press the pedal down slightly & then push the back of the quadrant round (cable towards back of car) then the ratchet clicks into place where it should be & it goes into gear no problem. As soon as I take my foot off the pedal the quadrant goes back to the same stupid position!

When I lift my foot & the pedal raises, there is a flat metal flange at the top of the pedal box that moves the pawl up & releases the quadrant (this is when it goes back to being one tooth out).

Is the problem the tension in the spring between the quadrant & pedal? Has anyone ever had this problem?
