The blow off valve isn't working, and the compressor is trying to start against tank pressure.
It was probaly managing to blow off enough with the leak, before you fixed it, to start up.

Nail on head there mate,but there is a good chance the air is leaking back throught the NON RETURN VALVE which is a brass fitting thas has a rubber seal like a rowntrees fruit pastel in it.The air leaks back through this pastel along the small pipe which is usually 6mm plastic back into the switch and creates the problem you have.Do not leave the compressor like this as eventually the motor will burn out do to struggling to restart....What make is the compressor??????????
