It's probably the maf sensor. Unplug it and it won't do it. (however you'll use notice a drop in fuel economy but a bit of a pick up in performance - mine dropped from 35mpg to 28mpg)

Get a good second hand one from a scrappy (unless you've got 140 quid going spare for a new gen ford jobby) it'll be about 15 quid.
