The plate will only go one way round, due to hitting the flywheel centre if wrong way, was the plate a nice sliding fit on the splines of the box, I assume you checked first, if not it should have had some rubber grease applied here, as sometimes the plates jam to the input shaft splines and don't move away minutely from the flywheel, had the same when I got my cossie, took box off and applied rubber grease to cure perfectly.
Is your gearbox oil level correct, as in not super low, as this will make the box easier to spin, whereas the small drag caused by the oil stops it turning so freely and helps with this problem.
