Lamb - does it feel like something moves at the back end just before you engage first? That is a classic sign. Also on hard gear changes it will thud at the rear end as you describe.

No mate it's not like that at all. I've googled this and I think it's what others call the M clunk. I just mean when you engage 1st at standstill you can feel it. Also the change can feel notchy depending on how quickly you do it and disengage clutch etc. I did not explain myself well at all.
It certainly does not thud on harsh changes, it's had a few of those and all is well
