How did you "sort" the bearing just out of interest, new turbo?
And yes, there needs to be a pipe connected or you will have no boost.
As said it's actually the other way round, with no pipe connected you will run more boost than desired and so you can actually destroy your engine with it disconnected! As standard it would be plumbed to the Amal valve.
