However the facelift models (So 4x4 should as well in theory) do have it they have a lever on the left of the steering column, the steering cowling as well as the dash is totally different and so is why your having problems.
The facelift dash also had a cut out in dash to accomodate the lever and also has a opening bin on the drivers lower facia wheras yours should just have like a speaker grill cut out in it?

Heres a photo of the lower dash, drivers side.
And the complete dash as it stands with the rake adjust on the steering column. The car is a 1988 2wd. So do i need a 4x4 lower dash? And the picture below shows the colour difference. Although its exagerated by the camera flash, it is two different shades.
