The only real way to check the drop links is to unbolt one end, if the wheels are at different heights there will be tension on the drop links, so you'd be unlikely to feel/detect play.
Other things to check are the tca joint, and the wheel bearing, a dud/broken spring will not cuase a clonk but can cause the inside of the tyre to be wiped out.
