I just leave them all out, then rotate the cam so the lobe is pointing up, then rotate 180degrees so it is pointing down, drop in lifter, fit arm meassure gap, adjust whilst in situ (bit fiddley but saves some time), remove, lock off, refit and check, remove, adjust, repeat...
From my experience, I found that if you adjusted them insitu then removed them and tightened the lock nut up, the gap decreased and closed it up tighter than the correct tolerance. Be carefull when doing it this way so you don't close the gaps up too much.
