On the pads: Yes, a washing machine will sort them nicely, but if you've only got a couple to do and it's not worth doing a washing cycle (plus if your missus will give you earache for using the machine for 'car stuff' ), then you can do them equally well (and imo better) by hand.

Simple everyday Fairy washing up liquid massaged well into the pad will break down and dissolve the polish residue that's migrated deep into the cell structure of the pad. Then just rinse thoroughly under the tap until the water runs clean with no soap and leave to dry naturally overnight.
