Yea, my old bean tin did this too... IIRC the starter has a heatshield on there from factory, but it rots off after a while, which after time/many heat cycles causes problems starting once it gets toasty.
Thats what I was told when I put up similar symptoms all those years back... changed the starter and it was bang on again.

Can't picture the starter motor now but do you have to change the complete motor? Can you not just change the solenoid?
