I know someone who bought a proper mint E46 330d coupe from salvage it was flood damaged that was cat b paid £1800 for it sent away for the book & got it back car dried out & sold it for 6k. new owner got a good deal as well car had 26 k on the clock still going strong. But that was luck i suppose.
