Default Escort TD camshaft snapped!

Got a phone call from my mate earlier saying that his car had just "stopped" and he can't get it started again. Now having not seen it i thought it was the alternator belt had eventually snapped or just come off as it had been slipping for months now (as all diesels do). So he gets the car towed home and asks me to come and have a "look" so i get to his grab his keys and turn the engine over only to here the dreaded sound of no compression , "I Think your timing belt has snapped" i said to him he replies with "what does that mean?" my Reply "Your engine is fooked!" So i whip the timing cover off to find the timing belt still intact??????????
Upon removing the rocker cover i found that the cam has basically snapped in 3 places ! Is this a common problem or could it have been caused by something else?

Another thing anyone know the head bolt torque settings/sequence for a 1.8 TD? Anyone changed the head on one of these and are they a bitch to do as ive heard horror stories about just fitting the belt's on these motors would the pump belt have to be disturbed if im just changing the head? and to add to the fact the bugger has power steering AND Air Con!!!
