Theres your problem mate. if your bulb has gone then there isn't a full circuit you need to dash light to be working to make the circuit complete.

buy prongs i mean little spade terminals 2 of witch should be sightly larger than one of them the dash wire needs to be connected to the smaller one. but yeah the power connects to the b+


Some of then original alternators just came with little plugs that you plugged into the alternator ( no wire stripping or crimping required) by the looks of things you have a universal style one.
