And a new PC would be great, unfortunately now I'm on my own and having to pay the mortgage and bills there isn't much spare cash for that sort of stuff so I have to make do with what I have. I can swallow £30 on RAM and £40 on a HDD, can't justify the £300+ required to replace the whole thing

this is the hard drives IDE..as you didnt state it was IDE or SATA drive...IDE drives first
