My thinking behind it was more air and the same fuel = lean mixture. but is that how it would work?

i'm not sure still
Focus wiring

When fitting a larger capacity intercooler you will be increasing the surface area that the charge air is cooled over. This therefore means the larger cooler will be more efficent enabling the cooler to maintain and control the boost temperatures over a greater period of time.
Now you will find your car goes better on a cold winters day when compared with a warm summers day. This is because on a cold day you will naturally find the charge temperatures are lower. Now you don't have the car setup for fear of running lean do you?

Tbh I found after fitting mine that by increasing the intake system volume I naturally lost a few psi of boost, so therefore what ever increases in the air density I gained were compensated for by the increase in volume, naturally I adjusted that , but if you plan not to adjust the boost I am sure you will have no issues what so ever and tbh your probably more at risk of ruining your engine running the cooler you do now because of high inlet temperatures than you would by running cooler inlet temperatures at the same boost setting.

Having said that you should still see a performance improvement due to the continued more stable charge temperatures over the course of the rev range/gear range and indeed have a safer engine as a result

I am sure you are probably expecting this part though.......

For the cost of a check up it would be worth getting a once over anyway for piece of mind and that way you can also get the most from your new toy
