Years ago the E36 had a problem of the steering column lower shaft (bulkhead to rack) failing. Result was that ALL E36's were recalled for a new lower column shaft fitting - Infact, BMW were so worried by this problem that still to this day the recall can be carried out on any E36 that hasn't had it done with BMW picking up the cost
