The 1.8 Zetec in Focus' are an older version than the 1.6 and 2.0, and not as great, but still a decent engine. Certainly a hell of a lot better than that 70's relic!
Dude that Crossflow never gave me a ounce of trouble. I've had the Focus for 6 months now and had the Idle Valve Control replaced, Head Gasket (at 26K), Radiator and pipes. Only now its running sweet but now the gearbox is whining like a monkey on smack

The zetec SE has an alloy block and head and was developed by yamaha for ford so is very efficient for what it is.
The Zetec R is a pile of crap by engineering comparison.
The zetec SE's flaw is it wasnt built in huge numbers and being very efficient already means limited capability for tuning without costly rebuilds.
The zetec SE drives completely different to a Zetec E/R engine. Its a high revving screamer.
That explains a hell of alot. Maybe i'll buy a Puma to replace the Focus
