Yes its quite a bit different compared to 2wd and the workshop manual that contains a very good pic of the 2wd camshaft and how to fit it dont have a pic at all over the 4wd.
I think both 2wd and 4wd use a o-ring but they differ in size.
the place you suggested for the o-ring on 4x4 camshaft is correct
but i've on 2 rebuilds i've left them out and had no issues
