It will use a lot of fuel without it working properly!

When the DSI clip breaks, the cable that attaches to it pulls back too far, thus stripping the gears inside the silver box that is bolted to the bulkhead behind the inlet manifold. When this happens, it makes a loud knocking noise for the first 10 seconds or so of starting the car.

I bet the previous owner has unplugged the box!
