changed the filter and only made a small diference,mines a 1.8 too and to change the filter you have to drop the exhaust and the tank to get to it
pain in the ass.
considering im on empty most of the time there wasnt much crap in the old filters,next to check is the injectors

You don't need to drop nothing to get to the fuel filter. If you can get the car up on a ramp its pretty easy.
