You should have between 13.5 - 14.5 volts at idle imo.

You shouldn't have to keep the engine running at 2000 rpm for the battery to charge.

If the alternator is only putting out 12v ish at idle (assuming the idle is correct and not too low) i would say something isnt quite right.
