This is simply not true, you only have to replace injectors once they have reached their limit, not at every stage of tune like you suggest.
The very fact that you can change injectors is not a downer as you suggest it is an advantage as it allows you to have a tactile and high performance engine without wasting fuel.
If your mate was melting pistons, it did so for a reason which was not to do with the type of management on the car, sounds really really badly set up to me
