If the headphone socket is sunk into the phone its 2G, if its flush (so any headphones can be used) its 3G.
The easiest way, by far, is to look at it;
2G is on the left, 3G is on the right.
For those that don't quite understand - 2G has a metal back, and the 3G has a plastic back (either black (most common) or white (rare, and only in 16gb models)
The other simple way is on the status bar on the top of the display, it will usually say 3G in a littlesquare
Oh, and this is often a dead giveaway
