IN ref to item 2, why not set up the database on one of your secure machines in your office, and just provide the reception computer restricted access to the database via the network. That way, if it gets pinched, then they gain nothing.

To go further, you could store all of the data on the secure machine, and then use a remote desktop session to access the data. That way, there would not need to be any information at all on the local machine. This would mean if they nick it - they get nothing data wise.
