My ISP advised this to me ages ago, their explanation was that BT do repairs to the connections every so often so it alters your current connection. By turning off the router you will connect to a fresh connection that hasn't been messed with [yet]. I regularly turn off my router because of this and it's amazing just how much faster it is when you turn it back on.
If you have a netgear router (other makes and models supported also) try a tool called DMT, you can manually resync to the exchangee and/or reboot your modem, and change the % ratio if your having disconnects for a stable / faster connection :
