Default removing a driveshaft

ok,basicly i was replaceing the drive shaft on my mk 2 ford orion and it was all goin to plan until i went to remove it and it slid right of but left the inboard outer part of the joint stuck in the gearbox? now i belive there is a snap ring inside that i have to yank out? there is no circlip on the inboard joint so when i pull the drive shaft it just slips out,how are you supose to get the outer part of the inboard joint out of the gear box? i tried pulling it out with the molegrips but it wasnt having it
