Its what controls the fuel mixture high up the RPM range, but there is a chance it could be cutting the supply to the injectors!

My mate converted a Mk2 XR2 and the muppet fucked the wiring up somehow and he had the same problem as you, as soon as we removed the plug from it the car started!
