Hi Dan, the 9" diff's were the Australian "Harrop" made unit and the European "Ford" unit, the CW&P's are different but both are still huge.
The Aussie diff has a spigot bearing to carry some of the loading on the pinion.
Some of the early race car's used a 7.5" diff with a solid mount backplate.
