I love it when a thread comes together

1) Muse haven't "only been going for the past 2 years" - I bought Origin of Symmetry in 2000, and that was because I had already heard their stuff prior to that, on radio since 1998/1999.

2) Where we they before that? Doing what every great band in the world today, and yesterday, have done - playing gigs. Muse are a live band, and they made their name playing live. They started at the bottom and worked their way up themselves, on their terms. Not many bands do that, and not many bands have done that.

3) Flash in the pan? Sorry, I beg to differ. Bands like Muse either make it or they don't. Muse have made it - they are a household name, play sell out arena's and stadiums and tour across the globe, selling albums by the shit load. Sure one day they will stop, or possibly even fade away, but bet your bottom dollar it won't be particulary soon. You say they won't be around in ten years - look at Metallica : everyone in the record industry - even their own management! - said they wouldn't make it, and would be gone in a couple of years. Now look at them. Biggest concert draw touring band second only to the Rolling Stones. Biggest record sales of any heavy metal band EVER. Been going strong since 1981 - and STILL making records now (currently in the studio working on the 10th studio album as we speak). Bands like Metallica don't fade away - they did it the "proper" way - start at the bottom, and give it everything. No day jobs and playing on weekends - they lived it through and through, and they got their success on their own terms. Fuck, they were playing arena's befroe MTV even heard of them! Muse are built from that same grit determination, and do things in the same way. I can't see them fading out in the next few years personally.

4) "Their songs ain't very good" ??? Thats opinion mate - don't pass it off as fact. In your opinion they ain't very good, but in the opinion of the millions of fans, the people who buy their albums, go to their shows, watch them on TV, not to mention the PROFESSIONALS in the music industry (who I bet you would tell a thing or two to right? ) who signed them, market them, and release their stuff - all those people think their songs are good. Personally I think Oasis songs are shite - but thats my opinion cos I am not a fan of the band - doesn't make it fact that their songs are shite now does it? I would say their proven success denotes their songs are widely acclaimed and the majority of the people must think they are good right?

How long have Oasis been going then? Their first album was in 1994 right? So 12 years. Now you yourself said that they have lost the edge, and record sales, concert draw and popularity says they are falling off the top spot. So how comes you use them as a headstone by which to judge other bands, if they have lost it and are fading out. Look at the last album - a "best off" album - which is typically the kiss of death for an otherwise desperate rock band!

Thing that pisses me off about people like you is the narrow minded "i know it all" attitude, and how you try to pass of opinion as fact. Why bother? If you really do know it all, why haven't you made your millions as a music mogul signing all the great bands and killing all the shit ones? What credentials do you have to back up your claims that just because you don't like a band, you say they are shit? You might think they are shit, doesn't mean it is so. I think they Artic Monkeys are shit - millions beg to differ. I think Oasis are shit - again, millions beg to differ.

Deifference is, I THINK bands are shit, and for that reason I don't like them. Yon come on here claiming to KNOW which bands are shit, and that your word is fact. Which is the basic element to an argument from someone who actually DOESN'T know what they are talking about....

But your opinion is your opinion, and I respect your right to have an opinion. Just don't try and pass it off as fact when it isn't.
